PSO Wine Dinner
I love working with the PSO! 2018 marks the third year I've done the event design for this major fundraising event. The designs have followed a theme of sultry colors and Matisse-esque shapes, all tied into the wine region featured each year. Thank you, Jen Segal, for bringing me on board to work on these!
Darcy James operates an aftercare service in Cumberland, Maine, and she wanted a brand identity that conveyed the nurturing, creative and joyful experience that she offers. Her aesthetic made me think of clean, colorful Scandinavian design – and the bird was born! Seeing this design on her signage makes me smile every time I see it, and Darcy tells me the same.
Diversified Communications called me in on this brand identity refresh for ProVideo Coalition – a real honor, especially since one of my sons is a videography fiend.
I worked with ecomaine to develop several pieces introducing a pilot program for municipal food waste recycling. Grocery store signage, brochures, yard signs and door hangers were among the tactics. Combining illustration and design always makes for a fun project, as well as doing work for such a great organization!
Maple's wanted to refresh their bakery and gelato brand, and I teamed up with Meredith Kennedy (one of my favorite local designers and a longtime friend) to get the job done. The design update has been a huge success – when I hear from people that they suddenly noticed Maple's once the big orange sign appeared, I am annoyingly happy.
This project was a great combination of brand design and creative direction for Delhaize America's value brand My Essentials, which encompassed several hundred items. The corporate direction was to follow the lead of European supermarket chains which were using predominantly white designs at the time for this type of brand. I really loved this project – I got to design the logo, packaging layout, typography, and develop the photographic style of the brand. I also provided creative direction for a gang of freelancers as we rolled this design out across hundreds of items with multiple packaging substrates and printing processes.
Healthy Accents is an extensive line of Health and Beauty Care products launched by Delhaize America in 2010, and still going strong in 2018! I co-designed the logo & typography with the inimitable Todd Wentworth, and then designed the packaging for the two segments – health and beauty. I love package design because of the technical challenges of keeping a design consistent across a brand whether it's printed on plastic or paper (or pressed into a bar of soap), flexo or litho, one color or many.
The need here was to bring consistency to the branding of the WorkBoat family, which contains a magazine, a website and multiple conferences and events. The overall brand is very strong and well-regarded, so the wordmark stayed pretty much the same – I did adjust the kerning a tiny bit. The different conferences and events had disparate logos, but now they all have different colors of the same unifying ship bow & wave logo, which is a much-simplified version of the previous International WorkBoat Show logo.
Open Bench Project
The Open Bench Project is an extremely unique maker's space in Portland, Maine. It offers classes, workspaces and community for students, entrepreneurs and many other groups. I love being on call to do design work for these guys – it's one of the coolest places on the planet.
Maine Real Estate Listings needed a logo and promotional pieces for a marketing campaign that educated realtors about an improved lockbox system. I designed this lockbox logo, two postcards and a sell sheet as part of the campaign. I had a great time working on this with Chris Philbrook, an account executive at Industrium in Portland, Maine – and Michelle Philbrook is a fantastic copywriter who is always a pleasure to work with.
The folks at Tower Publishing are always great to work with. I always enjoy collaborating with their authors on book jacket designs and usually continue to work with the authors on supporting marketing materials for their books.
Lani Toscano makes beautiful, fun events happen for her clients, planned exquisitely down to the tiniest detail. She cares about those details, and her logo reflects that – clean, upscale and timeless.
Lani Toscano is an incredible event planner here in Maine, and as part of this work, she developed Heartwood Essentials. She has trestle tables built from recycled decking and rents them out for events. Lani needed a brand identity that reflected the rustic craftsmanship of the tables as well as the sophistication and beauty of her event planning. I created this logo based on a table blueprint done by one of her craftsmen, and Lani is so happy with how it captures her business ethos.
Trade & Trends Food Show
I really enjoyed getting to develop a logo for this new show – Kim Noyes at Diversified Communications asked me to take this one on, and I think the crisp, modern look works so well for the show. From the Trade & Trends website: "Trade & Trends Food Show is an event focusing on the latest innovations in food, specifically targeting food service and retail professionals. Over 100 companies will exhibit, including food purveyors, local wineries and breweries, and companies offering food-related equipment and services. Trade & Trends also features an educational program comprised of over 20 sessions. Its first edition will be held October 26 & 27, 2015 in Secaucus, NJ."
This was an email header that I got to design for Readymade Records/Whitesmith Entertainment. I love doing work associated with the music industry, and I particularly loved the approach Emily White and Brendan Benson were taking in the music industry – ultra-respect for the artist.
